Bird tours

January 17, 2009

Within an hour’s drive of the Sydney CBD some of the most beautiful birds and habitats on the east coast of Australia can be found. I’ve been birding in the Sydney area since the early 1970’s and can show you all of the iconic and fascinating birdlife of the region.

We also travel a little further afield to locations like the stunning Capertee Valley, Barrington Tops and the Shoalhaven region. The Capertee Valley offers fantastic birding, where species of the far west of NSW meet with many which are more familiar on the coast. The Shoalhaven is excellent for migratory shorebirds and is adjacent to locations where Ground Parrots, Eastern Bristlebirds and plenty more can be found.

Barrington Tops has an excellent range of birds amid magnificent scenery. We seek out the elusive and sought after Rufous Scrub-bird and Olive Whistler. Sydney tours are single day trips. All other tours are over night getaways.

Birds are my speciality, but we don’t ignore reptiles, butterflies, beetles, plants and our amazing mammals. You’re certain to enjoy the beautiful and fascinating birdlife of Australia and leave with many fine memories of your tours. I’ve no doubt that, like many others, you’ll be back for more!

From February to April male Lyrebirds are re-establishing territory and frequently through dominance display. We have observed up to five males displaying simultaneously to each other on tours. This video is of one of these encounters shot on a tour in 2007. From April to July the amazing courtship display takes place, where more finesse in the dance and a greater range of mimicry is heard. The very fortunate witness the female bird dancing beneath the “veil” of the male bird’s tail plumage, prior to copulation.
